What is an Otoplasty?

An otoplasty, commonly called ear surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the ear. It can change the size, shape, and position of the ears to meet the preferences of the patient. These changes can be subtle or more dramatic, yet the results are always tailored to the patient’s unique goals and facial structure.

Ear surgery involves incisions on the back of the ear and/or within the natural creases, allowing Dr. Baldenhofer to reshape the cartilage and minimize visible scarring. The results are permanent and often last a lifetime.

How to Begin Your Otoplasty Journey

The first step to getting otoplasty in New York from Dr. Baldenhofer is to schedule a consultation at one of our offices in Manhattan, Long Island, or the Tri-State Area. The consultation will entail:

  1. An overview of the procedure and what to expect
  2. Sharing your aesthetic goals and preferences
  3. A comprehensive examination of your ears
  4. Creating a surgical plan to address your specific aesthetic goals, budget constraints, and additional procedures, combined with the otoplasty

What to Expect on the Day of Otoplasty Surgery

On the day of your otoplasty, you will arrive at our surgical facility in Manhattan, Long Island, or the Tri-State Area. Here, you will be in the trusted hands of Dr. Baldenhofer and the surgical team, who will work together to carefully perform the surgery, which typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure.

During the surgery, you will be under general or local anesthesia, depending on your comfort and individual needs. Dr. Baldenhofer will create incisions along marked lines behind or hidden from your ears. After making the incisions, he will remove excess cartilage, pin the protruding ears back toward the head, and sculpt them into a more proportionate, balanced appearance.

To complete the surgery, Dr. Baldenhofer will close the incisions with sutures and place cotton wrappings around your head. You can return home the same day to begin recovering.

Combining My Otoplasty with Other Procedures

Our New York patients have found several benefits from combining their otoplasty with other procedures, both financially and aesthetically.

The facelift is considered the gold standard for addressing the lower two-thirds of the face, designed to lift sagging skin and reposition underlying facial tissues to restore youthful facial contours and tighten the skin.

Your Guide to Post-Otoplasty Care

Recovering from your otoplasty requires patience and adherence to some simple yet critical instructions. You will experience some swelling, discoloration, and itching, but these are mild. You will need to wear your bandages at all times, except when bathing, for several days to a week, or until Dr. Baldenhofer says it is okay to remove them.

Avoid sleeping directly on your ears by keeping your head elevated and lying on your back. You should also avoid any activities that could move your ears, including wearing a helmet or headphones.

After 1-2 weeks, you will return to the office for your first follow-up appointment, during which your sutures will be removed. You will need to attend a few more follow-up appointments over the next several weeks to months, and the schedule will be communicated to you after each appointment.
