Capsulectomy procedures involve the removal of scar tissue that naturally forms around breast implants over time. In some patients, this capsule becomes thickened, hardened, painful, or distorted, leading to a condition known as capsular contracture. Depending on the patient’s condition and surgical goals, Dr. Baldenhofer may recommend partial capsulectomy, total capsulectomy, or en bloc implant removal.
An en bloc capsulectomy involves removing the implant and its surrounding capsule as a single intact unit, without opening the capsule during removal. This technique may be considered in select cases involving concerns about implant rupture, severe capsular contracture, or other specific medical or reconstructive indications. However, not every patient is an appropriate candidate for en bloc removal, and the technique is not always necessary or medically advisable, depending on the capsule’s anatomy and condition.
GalaFLEX is an internal support mesh often used during complex breast revision or reconstruction procedures to reinforce weakened breast tissue and improve long-term implant support. Sometimes referred to as an “internal bra,” GalaFLEX provides additional structural reinforcement beneath the skin, particularly in patients with stretched tissues, recurrent implant bottoming out, or compromised internal support from previous surgeries.
